The German bookseller and publisher Gerhard Lang is celebrated as the inventor of the modern Advent calendar, having presented the first printed calendar with 24 small stickers on cardboard in 1904 – an idea that originated with his mother. As early as the 19th century, parents in Germany shortened the waiting time until Christmas by drawing chalk marks on the wall or lighting candles.
